Default Challenges to overcome before the US debut of the VW Amarok

When PickupTrucks.com talked to the President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America Stefan Jacoby about whether or not the Volkswagen Amarok, their compact pickup for overseas markets would make its way to the US shores, his answer was both clear and specific.

“We’d have to sell at least 100,000 Amarok pickups to make it feasible,” he said.

According to the article, only the Toyota Tacoma, which is the top seller in this segment is able to break through the 100,000 unit mark and the 2nd top seller is not even close to reaching that point.

Besides the chicken tax, which places a 25% tax to small trucks made outside the United States, Jacoby also cited the declining compact pickup segment in the US, as well as the location of their dealers, which are predominantly far from the areas where small trucks are popular as some of their challenges.

“Before we could bring [the Amarok] here we’d have to do a lot of homework,” said Jacoby. “But we have other vehicles to bring into this market first. Once we do that, we can talk about the Amarok.”

It looks like it could be a while before we will have a shot of seeing the Volkswagen Amarok in US showrooms.
