Register to stop seeing this ad! Has anyone had problems with the transmission running high (never reaching the red line) when towing? I tow a 30' travel trailer and when I go up an incline the temp gauge for the transmission rises to just below red line. Then when I level off or start back down the hill, the temp goes down.I was told by the dealer that is not unusual when towing and that as long as it never "red lines" it is okay. What have others experienced? |

Are you towing in 4th gear without the overdrive? You should tow that way all the time, never let it go to 5th gear with that size of trailer. What is the weight of it, are you exceeding the towing weight? So just slide the shifter if on the floor to the left and that will not let it go to 5th. Consider an aftermarket cooler, that might help some more than just the factory one.

I am just using Drive, instead of shifting into 4th gear. Wouldn't running in 4th gear make the rpm's rev high making the transmission run hot? I'm pulling about 5700# well within the trucks capability. If you think 4th gear would be best, I'll try that next time I pull the trailer. About the aftermarket cooler would the dealer carry that or should I contact a transmission shop?
Thanks |

have you tried someone to do the towing for you? if you are towing the above weight limit better let someone do the task for you or dont tow that vehicle. Driving experience have great advantage especially in towing issues. Ask help from others if you know your are not capable of towing something you have not done before.
